Where FTSE Companies Are Sourcing Their Marketing Leaders

As the expectations placed on senior marketing leaders continue to evolve, FTSE-listed companies are becoming increasingly deliberate in where and how they source their senior marketing talent. From our perspective as executive search partners, specialising in senior marketing roles, the market has broadened significantly in recent years, with boards looking beyond traditional pathways to secure leaders who can drive commercial impact and long-term growth.

Leadership capability

Historically, many FTSE companies sourced their CMOs and senior marketing leaders from within their own sectors, often prioritising deep category expertise and brand management pedigree. While sector knowledge remains valuable, today’s hiring decisions are increasingly focused on transferable leadership capability. Boards are seeking individuals who can navigate complexity, lead transformation and connect marketing more directly to revenue and value.

Cross-sector hiring

As a result, cross-sector hiring has become more common. Consumer, technology and digital-first businesses have emerged as important talent pools, providing leaders with strong customer insight, data fluency and experience in performance-driven environments. Similarly, leaders from high-growth or private equity-backed companies are increasingly attractive to FTSE boards due to their commercial discipline and ability to operate at pace.

Digital and customer expertise

Another noticeable trend is the growing emphasis on digital and customer expertise. With organisations continuing to invest heavily in digital transformation, many senior marketing roles now require a blend of brand leadership, data capability and commercial acumen. This has expanded the candidate pool to include individuals who have led customer experience, digital strategy or growth functions.

At the same time, internal succession remains an important source of leadership talent. Organisations with strong leadership development programmes are often able to promote senior marketers who already understand the company’s culture, strategy and stakeholder environment.

Ultimately, the most successful appointments combine the right experience with the ability to operate at board level. For FTSE companies, sourcing senior marketing leaders today is less about sector loyalty and more about identifying individuals who can lead growth, influence across the business and deliver measurable business impact.
