What makes a great leader?

If you are new to leadership, or have even been leading teams for a while, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or that we’re not getting the best out of people. Many of us try to work out what kind of leader we are, using well known leadership models, or subscribe to a blueprint of who we think we should be when actually, we can define ourselves.

Empathy for those around us 

What is key for any leader is knowing that the team around us is made up of individuals who work differently and react differently in certain situations, particularly in times of difficulty or stress. By acknowledging these differences, we avoid a rigid approach and get the best out of each other. While it would be ideal to programme our teams to achieve tasks in the same way and at the same time, it’s not possible, but they will get there (with our support) in their own unique way. 

Keeping an open mind 

A great leader will be curious and keen to learn, listening to thoughts and ideas from within their teams. This not only helps teams to develop, it will also help us to grow and bring about innovations that benefit the organisation itself. Great leaders understand that progress is more valuable than perfection and learning is for life. Taking on new ideas and learning from others will bring energy and enjoyment for all. 

Clarity in our communication 

Making sure we are clear and enthusiastic when communicating strategic aims and objectives will provide a shared purpose and inspire those around us. Our teams will know exactly what they are working towards and can use their own creativity to achieve those goals. If the goals shift or if change is unavoidable, which has certainly been the case in recent years, being open and transparent will ensure that the team stay with us along the way.
