The importance of culture

As part of our client and candidate discovery process, we spend a lot of time looking at both the technical and cultural requirements of each role and organisation. We all know that technical expertise is essential, but cultural fit for employees is also essential for long-term success. Culture will shape our experiences because it relates to values and behaviours that impact the working environment. In our view, culture and chemistry fit should not be an afterthought, it should be the primary thought.

In recent years, company culture has become more important than ever, and a candidate’s perception of an organisation will influence how it’s seen as a potential employer. For candidates, culture will help to determine job satisfaction and success because they’re increasingly seeking working environments that suit both their values and working style. For example, a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture that will support their overall well-being is likely to enhance output and reduce turnover. Ultimately, in an organisation that encourages a sense of belonging and opportunities for growth, the workforce is more likely to stay long-term. And, let’s not forget the ongoing conversation around hybrid working because talent will be drawn to organisations that offer fairness and work-life balance.

For clients, their organisation’s culture will impact the attraction, retention and output of its workforce, and therefore the quality of products and services it provides. An organisation with a supportive, collaborative and customer-focussed culture is more likely to deliver better results. Also, by valuing openness, integrity and transparency through feedback, they will gain the trust of both their workforce and customers alike. It might seem easier for a candidate to research external brand perception but there are many routes to researching internal culture, too, so a full review and plan for cultural improvements should be continuous to ensure the ongoing attraction and retention of top talent.

At Suzie Walker Executive Search, we work with clients and candidates to ensure the right technical and cultural fit for the long-term success of each placement. In our two-stage interview process, one interview is entirely focussed on the culture and chemistry fit. Culture benefits both clients and candidates by creating an environment of trust, collaboration, and shared values, and our processes are thorough and enlightening for both parties.
