Boards’ Expectations from Modern CMOs and CDOs
Across FTSE 350 and private equity-backed businesses, expectations of Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) and Chief Digital Officers (CDOs) have shifted decisively. Boards are no longer appointing functional leaders; they are hiring enterprise-wide operators capable of driving measurable commercial impact.
For CMOs, the mandate extends far beyond brand stewardship and communications. Boards expect clear ownership of growth, spanning customer strategy, revenue contribution, brand equity and long-term value creation. Commercial fluency is essential. Today’s CMO must speak the language of the CFO and demonstrate how marketing investment translates into enterprise value. Data literacy and performance accountability are assumed, not differentiators.
For CDOs, the expectation is equally demanding. Digital transformation is no longer a standalone programme; it is fundamental to competitiveness. Boards look for CDOs who can modernise infrastructure, unlock the value of data, embed AI and automation where appropriate, and enhance customer and operational experience. Crucially, this role requires influence beyond technology, aligning product, marketing, operations and IT around a coherent digital vision.
What unites both roles is the need for integration. Growth and transformation cannot sit in silos. Increasingly, boards seek leaders who can collaborate effectively, clarify ownership of revenue levers and remove organisational friction. Agility, cultural leadership and the ability to operate at pace are highly prized.
From our perspective, as executive search partners, the most successful appointments are those where boards are explicit about mandate, decision rights and outcomes. Ambiguity at the outset inevitably leads to misalignment later.
Modern CMOs and CDOs are expected to be commercially astute, technologically fluent and culturally influential. Above all, they must demonstrate that their function is not a support service, but a central driver of strategy, growth and competitive advantage.
