In our ‘Polishing your interview skills’ article, we talked about the preparations you should make in advance of your interview, including the need to think about the questions they might ask you. One of our favourite questions, which adds some fun and creativity to any interview, is ‘What is your superpower?’ 

At Suzie Walker Executive Search, our team of expert headhunters guide hundreds of well-matched and high-performing candidates through the interview process each year. So, here is some background and guidance on this unique but highly relevant question. 

The purpose 

On the face of it, you might find the question trivial and silly. However, what the interviewer is really asking for is your greatest strength. In addition, they are seeking creative answers, how you present yourself and your ability to think quickly under pressure. They might also be looking to lighten the atmosphere and put you at ease – every interviewer and interview is different. 

Examples 

So, what are some examples of superpowers that you could use? What about X-ray vision? The ability to analyse a situation and form a decision based on your findings. Or the ability to fly? Seeing things from a difference perspective to identify new and unique opportunities. Or perhaps mind-reading? Having the emotional intelligence and empathy to understand and support your team effectively, which are signs of a great leader. 

Relevance 

Whatever superpower you choose, it is important to ensure it is relevant to the role you are applying for. Think about your greatest and most relevant strength that can be applied in this fun and creative way. For someone applying for a job as Chief Data Officer, for example, it could be shape-shifting – having the ability to effectively collect information, analyse it, and mould it into a strategic opportunity. You can then substantiate this with an example of how you have successfully used your superpower in your current or previous roles.
