With the summer holidays fast approaching, we’re experiencing an extremely busy time with a strong pipeline of senior marketing leadership roles - both interim and permanent. We have spoken to hundreds of talented senior leaders in recent months, so it was such a pleasure to meet with a vibrant group of Chief Marketing Officers at our latest networking breakfast event at The Delaunay, London. 

At Friday’s event, we talked about the current recruitment market, which has been strengthening this year. We have a strong pipeline of senior marketing and digital marketing roles; we’re forecasting that it will remain constant throughout the summer holidays (no summer lull this year) and with a busy peak in September. In preparation for that peak in the recruitment calendar, we talked about the importance of taking time to prepare for your next career move in the months of July and August, as many of you will be taking a well-deserved holiday. We discussed what hiring companies are looking for in Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) briefs at present (it was an extensive and comprehensive list), the importance of being clear as to what the ideal role, company and culture looks like to you; and working on your personal brand, particularly on LinkedIn.  

While we are experiencing huge activity and demand for senior marketing and digital marketing talent, it is a “client’s” market at present - there’s a wealth of talent who are actively looking and available to start, so it’s a very competitive market for candidates. To put that into context, our data shows us that we’ve received just under 2498 new registrations/requests to share updated CVs in the past 112 days and the most recent interim Marketing Director role we placed received 982 applications, in addition to our network. 

Planning will be key in becoming the successful candidate in a recruitment process at present. In a client driven market, it’s important to be clear on what good looks like to you for your next role, presenting brand ‘you’ in the best light and upskilling where possible. There are a numerous, high-calibre virtual courses available on digital marketing and AI for example. Investment in yourself is crucial right now and the ‘train hard, race easy’ mentality will serve you well.
