Leadership insights for marketing candidates

There has never been a better time to move towards the next stage in your marketing career. Here at Suzie Walker Executive Search, we have not seen such a buoyant recruitment market in decades, where there are simply more roles than candidates. That said, companies are looking for marketing candidates who will strategically and creatively ‘disrupt’ in their sectors, requiring specific skills to do so. Here are some insights to help when preparing for your next role:

Technical skills

As digital opportunities expand and as customer behaviour evolves, companies expect performance marketing to continue improving return on investment, so we are seeing the supply of digital and performance marketing roles increase. It is no longer enough for a Chief Marketing Officer or Marketing Director to just oversee a team of digital and performance marketers – it is now crucial for those leaders to be digitally-strong, with the ability to strategically and creatively make the most of opportunities. We recommend keeping your skills up to date through learning and development with respected course providers, like the Chartered Institute of Marketing and The Marketing Society, and continuing professional development (CPD) via seminars and workshops at events like the Festival of Marketing, taking place this week.

Integrated marketing knowledge

While the digital skillset is constantly evolving, marketing fundamentals remain the same, effectively utilising the marketing mix to create a fully immersive brand experience for the customer. In a recent report by econometrics firm, Magic Numbers, research showed that the optimum share of budget to spend online is just 40-50%, so integrated marketing remains as important as ever. Leaders must balance being a catalyst for change and innovation, by embracing new technologies that improve customer offerings, with keeping those marketing fundamentals in mind.

Leadership skills

Strategic decisions are made quickly in turbulent times, particularly in recent years, and marketing leaders need to adjust their team’s sails according to changing priorities. So, leaders have a responsibility to effectively communicate these changes and to motivate the team – this ability to adapt and move forwards will inspire others. A strong leader will also nurture their team, ensuring engagement and strong performance. They will be responsible for maintaining the team’s talent pool and having a succession plan ready for all eventualities. In our Content Hub, we share what makes an effective Head of Marketing, Marketing Director, Chief Marketing Officer, and Interim Chief Marketing Officer, in detail.
